چکیده

Methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a commonly used gasoline additive. Leaking underground storage tank systems, spills, and pipeline failures are the causes of reported groundwater contamination with MTBE. The impact of vegetation on MTBE plume transport in groundwater and volatilization was experimentally examined. The experimental system consists of six channels, five of which are planted with alfalfa plants and one of which is unplanted to allow an investigation of the impact of vegetation. Water with 100 μl/ L (0.844 mM) MTBE was continuously fed into each channel at 1 L/day for 72 days, then the feeding was switched back to distilled water. The channel groundwater effluent MTBE concentrations and the soil gas MTBE fluxes were monitored. The experimental results from planted channels and the unplanted channel are compared.

Adsorption of methyl tert-butyl ether using granular activated carbon: Equilibrium and kinetic analysis

The adsorption of methyl tert-butyl ether by granular activated carbon was investigated. The experimental data were analyzed using the Freundlich isotherm and the Langmuir isotherm. Although equilibrium data were found to follow Freundlich isotherm model, it were fitted better by the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 204.1 mg/g. The kinetic data obtained at different concentr...

Fate of gasoline oxygenates in conventional and multilevel wells of a contaminated groundwater table in Düsseldorf, Germany.

In a gasoline-contaminated site in Düsseldorf, Germany a two-year monitoring program was carried out to determine the presence, behavior, and fate of 12 gasoline additives in a total of 96 samples from 14 groundwater wells. The origin of contamination was suspected to be a gasoline spill at a gas station. Target compounds were methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE), its main degradation products, tert-...

Biodegradation of Methyl tert-butyl ether by isolated bacteria from contaminated soils to gasoline

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was originally introduced as an additive to increase octane number into gasoline in the 1970s. Its use was primarily as an octane enhancer to replace lead in gasoline. Later on, it was also used as an oxygenate, up to 15% v/v, to accomplish a cleaner burning fuel with reduced emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The problem with MTBE is that it has cause...

Stable carbon and hydrogen isotope analysis of methyl tert-butyl ether and tert-amyl methyl ether by purge and trap-gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry: method evaluation and application.

In order to monitor the behaviour of contaminants in the aqueous environment effective enrichment techniques often have to be employed due to their low concentrations. In this work a robust and sensitive purge and trap-gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry method for carbon and hydrogen isotope analysis of fuel oxygenates in water is presented. The method evaluation included the de...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in a wetland constructed for benzene-, methyl tert-butyl ether- and ammonia-contaminated groundwater bioremediation

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which are present in most natural environments, have demonstrated capacity to promote biodegradation of organic pollutants in the greenhouse. However, it is not certain whether AMF can spontaneously establish in phytoremediation systems constructed to decontaminate groundwater, because of the unusual conditions during the construction and operation of such sy...
